Massage for People with TMD (temporomandibular joint disorders) – IN PERSON (includes intraoral instruction – 12 hours)
Course Description: Massage for Patients with TMD (temporomandibular disorders) class introduces a massage protocol synthesized from a variety of bodywork techniques that address disorders of the muscles, bones and joints of the temporomandibular joint directly (including muscles of the neck, face and jaw, bones of the sacrum, and craniofacial bones) as well adjunctive areas where pain or restriction affects the TMJ (neck, pelvis, general tension). Students will learn to apply Swedish, neuromuscular and myofascial techniques to the hips, and specific muscles of the neck, face, and head including SCM, scalenes, medial and lateral pterygoids, omohyoid and masseter muscles and utilize craniosacral techniques for the mandible, temporal, sphenoid, maxilla, palatines, and vomer bones.
Dysfunction of the temporomandibular joint originating from mandibular and masticatory muscles can produce a complex of symptoms. Patient complaints can include frontal and lateral face pain, ear pain, stuffiness, tinnitus, dizziness, jaw pain (with or without popping or other joint noises), cervical neck pain, and toothaches. Restricted mouth opening and mouth opening with deviation are often observed and deviated jaw symptoms are not rare.
Massage for Patients with TMD includes simple self-care suggestions for moving, stretching, and breathing that address the jaw, neck and whole body. These enhance the effects of the TMD massage during, before or after session. Also included are directions on the appropriate application of cold and heat therapy.
