Course Description: Ethics/communications courses typically focus on regulations, professional codes and codes of conduct to establish professional boundaries. Creating and Reflecting on Boundaries and Inclusion provides a framework and practice for creating healthy boundaries for real life situations with thorough discussions of the challenges of overly porous or rigid boundaries. This class also explores the value of setting healthy self-boundaries.
Creating and Reflecting on Boundaries and Inclusion is designed to strengthen the massage therapist’s ability to use mindful and focused consideration of healthy v. unhealthy boundaries in clinical practice. Heathy boundaries directly improve rapport, quality of life for client and therapist, time needed to heal and sense of safety and ease for the client.
We will explore:
- What are boundaries and what is their purpose?
- Effects of unhealthy Boundaries – Burnout and Loss of Livelihood
- Rigid vs. Porous Boundaries
- Insights from psychology/mental health that can improve boundary setting (while respecting Scope of Practice)
- Influences that create Porous or Rigid Boundaries
- Challenges to establishing Good Self Boundaries
- Creating a Safe Space where Clients feel accepted for who they are
