Moving from Helplessness into Hope – 3 hour ZOOM Interactive class

“Hope is important because it can make the present moment less difficult to bear. If we believe that tomorrow will be better, we can bear a hardship today.” – Thich Nhat Hanh

Hope is like a road in the country; there was never a road, but when many people walk on it, the road comes into existence.” ― Lin Yutang.

Course Description:  Chronic Pain patients are bombarded with negative experiences and starved for lack of positive ones.  People who suffer ongoing pain without an obvious solution endure substantial losses that people without pain do not have to bear.  On top of it all, chronic pain creates negative messages and concerns that most patients don’t ordinarily contend with.

When a patient has endured Pain without significant relief over an extended period, accumulated negative experiences sap the capacity for hope.  Each defeat reinforces expectations that nothing can get better.  Massage can awaken the awareness of positive choices to transform automatic, conditioned patterns. Hope can be fostered starting with the initial interview. This course presents massage therapists with tools for working with Pain patients who may have “learned helplessness”. It empowers therapists to access presence, awareness and mindfulness (as opposed to fearful, angry or confused reactions) when making crucial decisions about how to touch Patients in Pain. Through understanding and specific verbal and touch communications, MT’s can better help Pain patients move out of hopelessness and towards hope.
