Pain and Stress3 hour ZOOM interactive class

Course Description:  One in five people suffer with pain yearly and one in ten people experience chronic pain every year.  The annual costs of treating pain are greater than the costs of treating cancer, heart disease and diabetes combined.  43% of Americans receiving massage reported they did so for conditions such as pain management, injury rehabilitation, migraine control, or overall health. Another 47% come to massage because of stress alone.

Physiologically speaking, stress is expressed as the rate of wear and tear on the body.  Hans Selye defined stress as a Physical Response to any unusual demand placed upon it to adapt. The demand/threat can be Real or Imagined which means it can originate within the body (e.g., Pain)

Stress is how a body responds to a threat, It is a natural adaptation to protect but unchecked, the Stress Response leads to constriction, hyperarousal and additional tissue damage, which can cause more Pain. This is why it is important to reduce stress for pain patients.

Treatment techniques and homework/self-care to target Stress can optimize work in the treatment room.  Massage therapists who complete this class will understand stress in its relationship to Pain.  Armed with solid information together with patient input, therapists become better prepared to optimize function and quality of life for clients who are coping with Stress and Pain.
