Trauma Informed Care – 3 hour interactive Zoom class, 3 CE’s in Ethics and Communication
Course Description: Knowing how to provide Trauma Informed Care will help LMT’s provide support for clients with a history of trauma while maintaining LMT scope of practice. Massage therapists who complete this class will be better able to define scope of practice in regards to clients who are experiencing trauma and to maintain healthy boundaries while displaying empathetic understanding in clinical care.
Trauma has its own unique physiology and symptom picture. Polyvagal theory illuminates stress and trauma responses to inspire new strategies for Trauma Informed Care.
Less obvious causes of trauma affecting massage clients can include:
- Pain, especially extreme pain or pain that is not resolving
- Pain brought on by Minor MVA’s (even fender benders), especially those that create whiplash
- Pain following Invasive medical and dental procedures (some procedures, e.g., pelvic exams, can be experienced as an attack, even if they make rational sense for preventive care)
- Injuries due to Falls
- Illness (especially when there is high fever)
- Prolonged immobilization (e.g., casting, splinting, even braces)
- Being left alone for long periods (especially in young children)
- Unexpected exposure to loud noises, bright lights, or extremes of heat and cold
People can be traumatized by any event (internal or external) that they perceive (consciously or unconsciously) to be overwhelming. Pain and Stress affect Trauma in both causative and correlative ways. Perception of trauma, stress and pain vary with age, ethnicity, gender, socioeconomic status, culture, and life experience. These all are discussed in this informative interactive ZOOM class. To purchase and sign up for this class with a group of 4 or more, have each participant CLICK HERE.
